In 2004 Susie's mother, who lived in a retirement community in Orange County, developed a case of dementia. She slowly began to lose the ability to take care of herself. Susie noticed small things at first like; the dishes being left in the sink, forgetting to take showers or pick up the mail. Susie was able to hire a housekeeper to handle some of her forgotten tasks but as the dementia progressed, her mental state deteriorated. She became angry, combative and paranoid. She chased off each housekeeper hired for her. Susie became her sole caregiver while trying to run a technology company and be there for her own family.
