Torrance, Calif. (PRWEB) July 1, 2010 -- Torrance Home Instead Senior Care is partnering with Mr. & Mrs. Handyman of Torrance to help keep seniors safe by offering free smoke detector and free installation while supplies last. Anyone who knows a senior in need of a smoke detector can call Home Instead at 310-542-0563. The company will provide the smoke detectors and coordinate installation with Mr. & Mrs. Handyman.

"Seniors are at especially high risk during a fire," said Denise de Cock, RN, owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Torrance, Palos Verdes and Marina del Rey. "Many seniors may not realize a fire has started. They may have difficulty walking and can easily become disoriented and not know how to escape. Our goal is to give back to the senior community and add an extra measure of safety for them while also removing the burden of getting the smoke detector properly installed."

The installer, Mr. & Mrs. Handyman, is based in Torrance and has more than 30 years experience in home repair and remodeling. "We wanted to support Home Instead with this program because we also believe in our community and it was a great way to help seniors," said Doug Bernhardt, co-owner of Mr. and Mrs. Handyman with his wife Cindy.

According to the United States Fire Administration, older adults run a risk that is 2.5 times higher of dying in a fire than younger people. Seniors also suffer a higher number of fire related injuries. Most seniors who lost their lives or were injured by fires were in their bedroom sleeping when the fire broke out. Seniors often suffer from illnesses or disabilities that limit their mobility, making escape from a fire more difficult.

Here are additional risk factors for seniors that increase the possibility of fire related injuries or fatalities:

•    Diminished mental facilities due to depression, dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

•    Slower reaction times

•    A reduction in vision, hearing, smell, touch and taste.

•    Medications that may affect a senior's quick decision-making ability

•    Economic situations may cause some seniors to use dangerous space heaters, candles or cooking methods. They may be unable to pay for necessary home repairs involving electrical problems.

•    Many elderly people live alone.
